The classics don’t need repeating – everyone knows about the Brandenburg gate, Berlin Dome and Checkpoint Charlie – and, don’t get me wrong, they’re a must-see! However, here are three extra activities to round out your trip to Berlin.
1. Berlin Global Museum

I have a knack for finding interesting galleries and it didn’t disappoint on my most recent trip to Germany, as I stumbled across Berlin Global.
A cross between a modern art museum and social political commentary, this exhibition focuses on the interconnection between the inhabitants of Berlin, the city itself and the wider world.
Do you enjoy interactive exhibitions and multi-modal media? Then you will love Berlin Global. It challenges traditional methods of displaying information and all five of your senses will be awakened. Smell and taste different spices that make up the famous Currywurst, dance to music in a giant disco ball, watch mini-interviews and movies, and virtually vote on ideas about homeland, security and multiculturalism.

There’s something here for every age, and if your friends and family struggle to find activities that suit everyone, this will keep you all happy and amused for hours!
In a city filled with history, it’s nice to take a step back, zoom out and examine Berlin from a wider, social perspective.
I would’ve loved to explore the entire Humboldt Forum that surrounded Berlin global as it was filled with other exhibitions. But I guess that’s just another reason to come back!
2. Holzmarkt 25

This park is known for its riverside views, dotted with bohemian bars & food stands, which makes it a great stop for lunch or afternoon snack (the cake I ate here was absolutely delicious and I’ve never had anything like it since). It’s on the way to the East-side Gallery, so an easy addition to your day out exploring the wall. In my opinion this place really captures the alternative style that attracts people to Berlin. It’s a haven of free expression, creativity and relaxation and the perfect atmosphere for sketching in my junk journal.
3. James-Simon Park

One of my most memorable evenings in Berlin was relaxing with friends on the grass of James-Simon Park, listening to a busker and watching the sun slowly set behind the Cathedral.
Sunsets by themselves are magical but can be tricky to catch amongst the maze of city buildings (especially in Europe as the streets are rarely straight!). The park, however, is right on the riverbank, and provided an uninterrupted view of the cathedral walls and iconic green German dome turning gold, a dusty pink and then cool grey.
If you get there a little before sunset, you can even enjoy dinner at Cowei, an Asian restaurant, in the last rays of afternoon sun. The food here was delicious and reasonably priced (and that’s coming from a budget backpacker!). Or, if you want a cheaper option and main character moment, have a little picnic on the riverbank. Pop past the supermarket and while you’re at it, try out some different types of German brötchen!
So there you go, 3 places will keep you busy on your next trip to Berlin!
